  1305 Ranch
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 3,600 square feet
Completion Date: Spring 2008

AIA Colorado 2008/09 Architects’ Choice Award

The remodel of this mid-century ranch house in an established Aspen neighborhood takes the opportunity to use the existing architecture and reworks the floor and roof plans to capitalize on the best features of the existing structure. Raising the roofline and adding clerestory windows and skylights flood the living spaces and master suite with natural light. Removing walls in the kitchen, living room and dining room create a generous and flowing open floor plan. Adding an entire wall of exterior glass doors to the centralized living room gives all of the public spaces in the house a strong connection to, and views of the park-like back yard. A rooftop terrace adds additional space for entertaining, relaxing and taking in mountain views while hot tubbing!

Sustainable components of the project include:
Retaining 60% of the original roof and walls & mature trees on lot
400 square foot solar panel array producing 4.2 KW of energy per hour from the photovoltaic panels
Recycling much of the construction debris - cardboard, wood, metal scrap
Replacing all old windows and doors with new energy efficient windows and doors
Efficient core and shell construction
Replacing old furnace with efficient boiler/radiant heat system
Metal siding and roof are durable and low maintenance
Roof color qualifies for energy star compliance - can save up to 40% in heating and cooling costs, non-vented and super insulated which is very efficient & is fabricated with 30% recycled content
Clerestory windows, glass sliding doors and skylights increase natural daylight reducing dependency on artificial light
Sustainable interior finishes include Lyptus wood, CaesarStone, and local Colorado yule marble
