  Ajax Tavern
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 2,460 square feet
Completion Date: November 2008

Situated at the base of Aspen Mountain, this famous après ski haunt at The Little Nell Hotel began it’s existence as Schlomo’s in 1989. In 1994 the restaurant underwent an extensive renovation to become Ajax Tavern. In its new incarnation, Ajax Tavern is open for lunch, après ski, dinner, as well as special events. The new design relocates the bar, expands banquette seating and adds architectural details. Updated finishes and materials bring the space into present day, while retaining the traditional tavern feel. Red is the predominant hue, accented by deep brown wood finishes. The space is enriched with brick masonry, leather upholstery, refurbished millwork and reclaimed oak floors. A series of drum shade pendants, hand-wrapped in red ribbon, define each booth. The interior design reflects a classic tavern aesthetic with a modern sensible feel, transcending time and design trends.

Sustainable components of the project include:
Retained and refinished 80% of the original wainscotting and wood work
Reclaimed antique oak flooring
Custom manufactured table tops fabricated from reclaimed antique oak planks, produced locally
Greenguard Certified leathers on booth and banquette seating
“Eco-Friendly” fabrics on loose seating with 50% of the fiber content being sustainable, organic and/or recycled
Energy efficient lighting
FSC wood chair frames
Low VOC paint
