  Brown Loft
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 1,575 square feet
Completion Date: May 2004

Aspen Sojourner Magazine, Mountain Homestyle Issue, “The New Guard” Mid-Summer 2005

Located in the heart of Aspen, the client wanted to create a modern urban space fitting to an outdoor lifestyle. The existing condominium was closed-in and dark. Windows were carefully placed into every room to help capture the mountain views in multiple directions and create light filled spaces. The existing upper level has a dramatic sloped ceiling, which was expanded and walls removed to create a "loft" like atmosphere. A new internal courtyard with space below becomes both an outdoor living room and opens up the great room and master bedroom to the northern views and light. Existing brick walls were maintained at key spatial areas and are highlighted with a minimal palette of white plaster walls and dark ebonized floors. Color is used strategically and is discovered in glass tiled walls and colored concrete countertops. Experimenting with the use of materials, the staircase uses concrete treads with sandblasted steel risers for a heightened experience as one ascends from the entry up into the light filled great room.
