  Clarendon 5
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 1,986 Square Feet
Completion Date: December 2009

The Clarendon 5 is a complete interior transformation to a dated three-bedroom, three-bathroom condo located in Aspen, Colorado. R+B performed full interior design, furniture and artwork selection and procurement. International clients call this condo home periodically throughout the year. The unit needs to accommodate multiple family members at the same time resulting in a flexible design for sleeping options and seating alternatives.

Two major design concepts were realized. In the living room, the existing fireplace was refinished in floor to ceiling stone and converted to gas. The fireplace is off-center to the seating area, and the stone hearth was extended asymmetrically to create an integrated bench in the new wet bar. This bench helps center the fireplace in the living room and provides additional seating for the large family. The other design concept was to create a wood box bisecting the double height stair space and the master bedroom. The wood box houses a home office and becomes a sculptural element in the gallery like stair space.

The overall design palette is a combination of warmth and modern featuring browns, tans and creams in varying textures. Custom millwork provides sophistication and space saving throughout the unit. Existing wood floors and beams were refinished. The existing bulky wood staircase railing was replaced with sleek blackened steel rails to help open up the space. Furniture flexibility was important. Each guest bedroom is designed to sleep either a couple or singles separately. The dining room table extends to accommodate twelve people. Each piece of artwork was handpicked specifically for the unit. Work from local artists at Anderson Ranch and a metal piece by Jeff Fontaine compliment the overall palette.

Sustainable components of the project include:
Renovation and reuse of an existing property
Low VOC paint
Refinished existing wood floors and beams
Natural coir mat at entry
Caesarstone slabs in kitchen and bathrooms
Walking distance to Aspen retail
