  Funnel House
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 10,000 square feet
Completion Date: Summer 2008

Located on a site with lake front acreage in the Meadowood sub-division of Aspen, the residence marries the breezy, relaxed character of a beach house with classic materials and deliberate proportion and detailing. The design responds directly to the client’s desire to create a central funnel bringing together family and friends. Public spaces are generously sized and flexible for entertaining and spending time together. Indoor/outdoor relationships are strong throughout the house and large windows bring the multiple direction mountain views into the house. The house program is considered for all ages. A green house allows for year round horticulture with an adjacent recreation room for rough housing and art projects. Private spaces are well proportioned and include an adult retreat complete with artist studio, music room and rooftop terrace for stargazing.

Sustainable components of the project include:
Passive solar elements - brise soleils & overhangs
Designed for natural cross ventilation
Efficient building envelope and Low-E windows
Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) fresh air system
Auto temperature sensing mechanical system that automatically regulates indoor air temperature with outdoor
Hot water solar collectors
Photo voltaic panels produce 3KW for 30% of electricity
Low maintenance exterior materials
Structural concrete and decorative concrete contain recycled material
Radiant heating with tight tube spacing: boiler runs at 90° instead of 120°
