  The Maroon House
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 8,250 Square Feet
Completion Date: Spring 2012

In an effort to preserve the views from their existing home just outside of Aspen, our clients purchased the lot next door. A one-story home is being planned on the lot for their new family residence. The design of the Maroon House is inspired by early 20th Century architect Rudolph Schindler’s 1920’s houses in Los Angeles with an emphasis on composition and integrated design. Poured in place concrete at two foot intervals become the back bone of this characteristically horizontal home. Exterior banded windows follow the two foot pattern and continue into reveals in the copper and stained gray siding. Indoor/outdoor living will define the home with a gracious west facing outdoor patio adorned with a fireplace and heaters. A welcoming entry courtyard with reflecting pool will offer a dramatic processional to the front door. A handful of specifically placed ceiling pop-ups emphasize the overall program hierarchy and highlight view corridors. Inside the home, rooms flow into one another providing an open living space. The client’s sophisticated art collection is an important design element inside and outside the home.
