  River Oaks House
Basalt, Colorado
Size: 3,100 square feet
Completion Date: Summer 2006

Colorado Homes and Lifestyles Magazine, “Simple Pleasures” June/July 2008

The site for the River Oaks House is tucked away on a quiet dead-end road in Basalt, Colorado. A winding path leads from the house through a stand of mature Oak trees and down to the Roaring Fork River beyond.

The source of inspiration for the form of the house was that the garage would resemble a found historic structure on the property and that the main house would appear to have been built much later. The form is based on mining-era vernacular with a bit of Victorian attitude which allows the house to blend in with the surrounding neighborhood.

The four bedroom house takes advantage of its natural surroundings with decks, patios and strategically placed windows. A bridge that overlooks the double height living room is poised to take in views of the river down below. An open floor plan keeps the spaces flexible and functional for the growing family.

Our client, the principal of Crimson Construction, which specializes in environmentally-conscious residential construction, served as the General Contractor of his own project. To keep the project within budget, simple materials were chosen and detailed in interesting ways. The reclaimed barn wood and rusty corrugated metal selected to clad the exterior are sustainable, easy to maintain, and perform well in the mountain climate. Traditional red siding adds a colorful pop. The interior finishes were chosen for their sustainability and include: Maple millwork and flooring, galvanized metal, glass tile, soapstone, custom metal work, Walnut and polished concrete.
