My House, “Space, Openness and Light” November/December 2005

AIA Colorado 2004 Citation Award

Drawn to the legendary flyfishing along the Roaring Fork River, the clients wanted to retire in a home that gently rests in a mature sage field with access and views of the river below. The form of the 5,750sf, three volume house is derived from local vernacular building types with integrated passive and active solar design. Features such as punched openings, high dormers and deep knife edge eaves allow the winter light to fill the spaces throughout the house. The central volume contains all of the public spaces required for living and entertaining, while the two end volumes contain the master wing and guest wing. The volumes are joined together by glass atrium hallways that act as "outdoor" connections. Solar panels used to heat the domestic hot water are designed into the roof. The exterior vertical wood siding is stained various shades of sage and is contrasted with a rusted corrugated roof.
