  The Wood Box
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 3,500 SF
Completion Date: March 2006

This project updates a single story house in the West End neighborhood of Aspen, Colorado. A loft was added with a huge picture window to frame a view of the entire mountain. The roof above the master suite was raised to allow room for new clerestory windows. The exterior was reclad in clear cedar siding. Applying full length boards horizontally made for an efficient use of this material. The fascia was wrapped in metal for easy maintenance and the ends were flared adding a playful element to the design. Grey stacked stone was used to re clad the chimney; the side was battered to enhance the geometry of the horizontal siding. The house is now a handsome wood box set in a stand of existing mature evergreen trees.
