  Zinc House
Aspen, Colorado
Size: 8,000 Square Feet
Completion Date: Summer 2006

The client wants a design for the exterior of the house that minimizes maintenance and solar gain to the interior spaces while keeping in context of the neighborhood. The new design reclads the home with a palette of low maintenance, contextual materials. Warm grey stucco with strategically placed control joints creates a panelized base for the house. Non-reflective Zinc in corrugated and hemmed horizontal panels is a contemporary replacement for the wood siding. Metal louvered brise soleils are integrated for external sun screens along the large south facing windows. Standing seam metal roof, anodized metal clad windows, aluminum steel guardrails, and stained teak handrail pull the composition together and add to the house’s durability.

The bathrooms in the house receive a modern make-over as well. The clean lines of custom concrete finishes on counters, flooring and shower walls are accentuated with modern fixtures. The addition of a Japanese Hinoki wood soaking tub transforms the master bath into a tranquil retreat, and is thoughtfully situated to take advantage of the mountain views.

Sustainable components of the project include:
Low maintenance durable exterior materials, Low-E windows, triple glazing in the double height living room
Brise Soleils act as a passive solar element to reduce solar gain
Reuse & rehab of the existing mechanical system to make it more efficient
Concrete floors and countertops fabricated with recycled content
