ROWLAND+BROUGHTON wins 2025 luxe red award for restoration and renovation for pan abode project
ASPEN, CO — June 18, 2025 — At a celebration held last night in Chicago, Rowland+Broughton Architecture and Interior Design was honored with the 2025 Luxe RED Award for Restoration and Renovation for our Pan Abode project. Hosted by LUXE Interiors + Design, the RED Awards (Residential Excellence in Design) gala brought together leading architects, designers, and creatives from across the country to celebrate outstanding residential design.
This national award underscores the strength of our holistic design approach, as R+B led both the architecture and interior design for the project, ensuring a seamless integration between form, function, and materiality.
“We’re honored to have Pan Abode recognized by Luxe and the esteemed RED Awards jury,” says R+B Founding Principal John Rowland, AIA. “This project speaks to the heart of what we do at R+B—preserving the spirit of place while elevating design to meet the needs of today. We’re incredibly proud of our team’s dedication and grateful to our clients for their trust in realizing this vision.”
About Pan Abode
Tucked beneath a canopy of old-growth spruce and aspen in Aspen’s historic West End, the Pan Abode project is a thoughtful restoration and contemporary expansion of a 1956 premanufactured log kit home—an archetype deeply tied to Aspen’s early ski and tourism heritage.
Charged with preserving the character of the original single-story pan abode cabin while integrating a modern program, the design team worked closely with the Aspen Historic Preservation Commission. Non-historic additions were removed, and the historic structure was carefully relocated off its original foundation to allow for the construction of a new lower level within the original footprint. Once complete, the log cabin was returned to its original position and meticulously restored, including sanding the exterior logs back to their original Western Red Cedar finish and reconditioning windows.
Inside, the historic log elements remain front and center, now complemented by contemporary materials like stone and steel. A new stair connects to the light-filled lower level featuring two bedrooms and flexible space. A separate, newly constructed residence on the south side of the site takes cues from the original cabin—its form, materials, and fenestration echoing history while standing distinctly modern. The central glass stair volume connecting all four levels is veiled by custom overlapping Pan Abode-style logs, seamlessly uniting old and new.
From the warm, tactile finishes to the balance between preservation and innovation, Pan Abode is a nuanced response to its context—one that honors Aspen’s past while embracing its future.
