Architectural Rigor | Thunderbowl | Aspen, CO
Tucked sensitively into the surrounding mountainscape with ski-in, ski-out access to Aspen Highlands’ Thunderbowl ski area, this tri-level 9,217 square foot vacation home comfortably accommodates multiple generations.
With the intention of bringing architectural rigor to the original 1990s home while injecting character and vitality, our team undertook an extensive interior remodel. Throughout, special attention was given to existing woodwork. A lightening of the overall palette included bleaching original floors and ceilings to enhance texture. Two existing staircases were re-finished and modern, edgy mesh guardrails were designed to complement existing metal detailing. Doors were replaced with sliders, mullions were edited out of existing windows, and new windows were added.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom suite was transformed into a single continuous gable volume flanked by an office and ample seating area, while a pair of children’s bedrooms reflect individual personalities. Open trusses connect the private spaces, distributing natural light and accentuating the newly updated synthetic shingle roof. The lower level houses adventure, media, and bunk rooms, plus a recreation room with a rock-climbing wall. An elevator connecting all three levels makes access easier for all ages.
Within the refreshed environment, the purposeful juxtaposition of old and new creates a refined sensorial atmosphere, while the addition of color adds a sense of playfulness. Meticulous attention to the selection and placement of furnishings supports the intention of creating a comfortable, casual living environment for all.
