Landmark Boulder, Colorado, hotel has exuded unconventional charm since 1909

DENVER, CO — January 17, 2018 — Rowland+Broughton Architecture/Urban Design/Interior Design is pleased to share that we have recently completed a restoration of historic Hotel Boulderado in Boulder, Colorado.

The renovation of Hotel Boulderado, set just steps from the vibrant Pearl Street Mall, preserves its more than a hundred-year-long historic legacy, while offering the functional, convivial atmosphere that today’s guests expect in a boutique hotel experience.

Drawing on Victorian design concepts and features within the hotel, carefully selected finishes and furnishings with clean, contemporary palettes bring new life to lobby and mezzanine event spaces frequented by visitors and the local community alike. New selections were carefully chosen to complement original features that were preserved, such as the notable main stair, historic wainscot, columns and crown molding, as well as historic upper level guest rooms. The new front desk room occupies the former gift shop, and provides a more intimate greeting area for guests. The original historic mosaic floor tile and the fireplace were resurrected and restored. Updating of hotel corridors, the front desk area, the front porch area, and exterior awnings is included in the project as well. Led By R+B Principal Sarah Broughton, team members on the project include Jayna Kline, IIDA, Senior Interior Designer, Amanda Christianson, AIA, LEED AP, and Indra Tjaja, Senior Project Architect.

Primary materials and finishes include:

  • Custom Axminster Carpet designed to emulate the look of an ancient Oriental rug with a watercolor style and warm soft colors.
  • Grove brickworks tile from Waterworks to restore the lobby-facing fireplace to its original splendor.
  • American Restoration Tile to repair existing historic tile floors.
  • Custom millwork for the front desk, which is covered with faux leather.
  • New light fixtures throughout from Currey and Company and Restoration Hardware.
  • Raydoor sliding door system in mezzanine meeting spaces

About the project, R+B Senior Interior Designer, Jayna Kline, AIA, comments, “It was such a joy to work on the restoration of this long-standing and beloved Boulder hotel. The architecture and interior design team aspired to celebrate and respect its significant history, while making it feel current and inviting. With the goal of creating a space where people could enjoy a casual bite, or settle into a cozy nook to relax or work, we balanced the large volume of the open mezzanine above and brought focus into the more intimate seating groups. Approachable and comfortable, with a tailored and sophisticated aura, Hotel Bolderado is set to welcome guests for another hundred years.”
