On the Boards

Privacy and sense of place are the primary motivators for this thoughtfully designed home, nestled amid a sagebrush pasture with commanding mountain views. Beyond an arrival sequence flowing through the sage, five unique buildings inspired by three-sided “loafing sheds” typical of the area’s early days are composed to resemble homestead compounds. Often located in pastures or paddocks, these structures served to provide horses with shelter from seasonal elements.

Description

Privacy and sense of place are the primary motivators for this thoughtfully designed home, nestled amid a sagebrush pasture with commanding mountain views. Beyond an arrival sequence flowing through the sage, five unique buildings inspired by three-sided “loafing sheds” typical of the area’s early days are composed to resemble homestead compounds. Often located in pastures or paddocks, these structures served to provide horses with shelter from seasonal elements.

A large covered terrace with disappearing glass-door walls creates seamless indoor/outdoor entertaining space, which in turn opens on to a central courtyard where the sagebrush meadow is invited in. Organic exterior materials are detailed in a minimal, clean-line manner. Gray limestone volumes provide a foundation and act as an organizing element for the shed volumes, which feature black shou-sugi-ban external siding and complementary soft gray weathered siding in recessed elements.
