ROWLAND+BROUGHTON ARCHITECTURE / URBAN DESIGN / INTERIOR DESIGN HONORED WITH DISTINCTIVE AWARDS BY THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS COLORADO CHAPTER

2020 AIA COLORADO FIRM OF THE YEAR AWARD

2020 AIA COLORADO DESIGN AWARD OF MERIT FOR ART BARN RESIDENCE

ASPEN, CO — August 20, 2020 — Rowland+Broughton Architecture / Urban Design / Interior Design is thrilled to announce that we have been honored with two distinctive awards by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado chapter, the 2020 AIA Colorado Firm of the Year Award and the 2020 AIA Colorado Design Award of Merit for Art Barn Residence.

Awards were announced on Monday, August 17th, at the socially distanced 2020 Design and Honor Awards Drive In Theater Celebration at the Denver Mart Drive In Theater. The event featured award recipients on the big screen, along with photos of the winning projects and jury comments, and was live streamed as well.

Regarding R+B’s selection for Firm of the Year, the awards jury concluded, “Rowland+Broughton create exceptional, award-winning work and are clearly passionate about equity and diversity in the field of architecture. As a woman-led firm, it is fantastic to see the impact that this firm has on the architecture community in Colorado, and more broadly. They are an emerging firm with more and more recognition with each passing year.” The jury included members of the AIA Colorado Board of Directors and previous recipients of the Architect of the Year and Young Architects of the Year Honor Awards.

“Beyond thrilled, we are honored, humbled, proud, grateful, and most of all thankful, to AIA Colorado and the awards jury for this recognition as Firm of the Year, to our clients and team, past and present, and to the many colleagues, design professionals, engineers, and product representatives who have been part of our journey,” shares R+B Principal, Sarah Broughton.

“Seventeen years ago, as we started R+B at our kitchen table in our Aspen condo, our goal was to build a solid portfolio of lasting architecture one project at a time,” adds R+B Principal, John Rowland. “Today we have the same goal, each day focusing our full attention on each client and each project. Firm of the Year is a landmark accomplishment for our Aspen and Denver studios, and the Design Award of Merit for Art Barn acknowledges the power of collaboration and how creative design skills inform impactful architecture. Recognizing these meaningful awards, we look forward to our journey moving forward. Congratulations to all involved.”

About Art BarnArt Barn is a custom home designed for displaying and experiencing various forms of mixed media contemporary art. Owners use the residence for engagement with the art community, raising awareness of the arts by hosting events supporting local entities, and housing visiting artists.

The home is positioned so the entry façade addresses a pastoral ranch meadow and the rear façade frames panoramic views of Aspen. The design was predicated upon a vision that the rural vernacular of the home should rest naturally on the site. Due to the precarious nature of the site and strict height limits, a simple 113-ft long singular volume was chosen for its quiet reverence. The singular gable form, along with the minimalist detailing of the shou-sugi-ban wood siding and fenestration, suggests a simple and pure design that is carried through to the inside.
