Including acquiring Aspen Modern Historic Landmark Designation from the Aspen Historic Preservation Commission (AHPC), the design team undertook the challenge of expanding an existing circa 1965 historic structure, a rustic, single-story premanufactured log kit home that once served as an idealized version of the western log cabin. The interior was gutted and the cabin moved off its foundation to make way for a new below grade level with two bedrooms and flex space, all within the original footprint.
Once reunited with the foundation, the integrity and architectural characteristics of the historic log cabin will be retained. Exterior logs will be stripped back to the original pine finish, windows repaired and re-painted. Inside, a new primary bedroom and kitchen will feature the original exposed logs and simple stone and brushed metal finishes. A new connecting stair will allow light to flow to the lower level.
In accordance with the AHPC requirements, the design of the new building reflects the form, materials, and fenestration of the historic structure while distinguishing it as contemporary. Subtle references to the historic building include architectural details such as overlapping logs at the monumental, glass encased stair, horizontal wood plank siding and rainscreen with vertical details, and a board formed concrete base. Dark bronze aluminum clad windows will be triple glazed to reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling the building. Upon completion, each residence will be home to a family with young children.
