John Rowland brings over two decades of experience in architecture and design as Principal of Rowland+Broughton. Inspired by collaboration with clients, artists and other design practitioners, John sees the opportunity for an intrinsic integration of art, space and light in the unique contextual relationships inherent to each of his projects. John’s design skills, along with his business background and focus on big picture planning and processes, provide the differentiation for which R+B is known. He holds extensive expertise in presenting projects in the public forum with a focus on gathering public consensus.

As Principal of R+B, John is involved in all projects in size and scope, and provides leadership on all marketing and business development activities. His dedication to client service, sustainability, architectural excellence and overall success continues to be the inspiration that drives the firm. He has served as a Commissioner with the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Aspen, Aspen Civic Master Plan Advisory Committee, and the City of Aspen Build-Out Advisory Committee.

R+B has been the recipient of several City of Aspen Historic Preservation Commission Awards and numerous AIA, ASID and IIDA awards for excellence in design. The team is especially proud to have won AIA Colorado’s 2009 Young Firm of the Year. R+B is also annually recognized for firm achievement on Interior Design magazine’s Top Hospitality Design and Interior Design Giants lists.

As Principal of Rowland+Broughton, Sarah brings over two decades of experience in the architecture and interior design industry. She is the champion of R+B’s design philosophy and rigorous quality control standards, as well as a leader to her design staff. In addition, she is a highly respected colleague in the design community and among clients.

Sarah leads the studios in participation and management of all phases of the design process, including client relations and proposals, project programming, conceptual design, design development, architecture and interior design, project budgeting, construction documentation and contract administration. Sarah is very active in the Aspen community and has served as Chair of the City of Aspen’s Historic Preservation Commission. Hired to rewrite the Aspen Commercial Design Guidelines, R+B frequently provides feedback to the City of Aspen on land use regulation.

R+B has been the recipient of several City of Aspen Historic Preservation Commission Awards and numerous AIA, ASID and IIDA awards for excellence in design. Amanda Christianson brings over a decade of experience in architecture and project management to her role as Director of Operations at Rowland+Broughton. Applying her strengths in strategic planning, efficient communication and organization, she ensures that operational procedures are in alignment with the firm’s mission and core values. She is a resource for financial project tracking, risk management and quality assurance on technical production, design and and guiding project teams through all phases of the design process.

Amanda is also a Studio Leader in Rowland+Broughton’s Denver studio. She has been the Project Manager for Matsuhisa Denver and the award-winning residences Black Birch Modern and Game On.  She is also currently Project Manager for the Sky Residences at W Aspen and Art Barn.  Anticipating clients’ needs, organization and rigorous follow-through have been a hallmark to her approach with each project team.

Izzi Wagner has over two decades of experience in the field of consulting and business. Previously, she served as Vice President of a FOF, CBIS, helping to establish their Aspen office, and with The Aspen Institute as an Associate responsible for Institutional Advancement.

In addition to developing strategic initiatives for the firm’s internal and external marketing efforts, Izzi is responsible for stimulating the firm’s success by hiring the proper balance of employees and promoting the firm’s cultural, financial and operational objectives. She also assists in establishing the firms vision, mission and core values, provides information, tools and training to staff, and oversees direction of recruitment, employee relations, leadership development, the firm’s internship and mentoring program, performance management, benefits and compensation.

In an effort to direct and manage R+B’s business development efforts, Izzi:

+ develops, implements and maintains effective sales and other programs that provide maximum exposure to new business prospects within the firm’s established goals and objectives

+ develops and implements promotional programs and plans, cultivates and develops potential business prospects, and prepares proposals, presentations and qualification packages

+ provides market research, marketing training, system and procedure development, business development support and public relations

+ produces proposals by coordinating proposal/presentation preparation, including scheduling project milestone and reviews, and working with project managers to ensure that quality material is submitted and delivered

+ manages proposals, marketing metrics and other sales/public relations material

Dana Ellis has over a decade of experience in the field of architecture and design. Raised in Connecticut, she spent time studying and designing in Detroit, Michigan, and at the Mezzogiorno in Southern Italy. While earning her Bachelor of Arts, she spent time at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, a semester in Copenhagen, Denmark, studying architecture, and a summer interning with a landscape architecture firm in London, England. Dana continued her education with a semester at the Ecosa Institute in Prescott, Arizona, where she learned about sustainable building materials and ecological design.

While studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, she was editor of an architecture publication titled Works in Progress, and a studio teaching assistant and teacher of Degrees of Freedom, a collegiate course on design and renewable energy. Dana also enjoyed the opportunity of working closely with builders on the adaptive reuse of an old mill building along the Woonsocket River while with Truthbox Architects in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dana was involved with the renovations of prominent Aspen eateries, such as Justice Snow’s, The Little Nell’s Element 47, and White House Tavern. Her passion for design lies in working with inspired clients and specifically with local business owners. Helping clients find a sense of place is a guiding inspiration.

Dana is active in an assortment of volunteer activities, working with Carbondale Arts, and serving on the board of Dance Initiative in Carbondale, Colorado.

Sara Boulet Upton has worked in the field of architecture and design for over two decades as a project manager and architect.  Currently, she is working on custom residential homes, with a focus on multi-parcel family estates, as well as mixed-use buildings.  Her experience has allowed her to provide quality, buildable information to contractors in the construction documents phase of a project. Sara loves working with families to help them achieve their goals of creating beautiful and inspiring living spaces.

Raised outside of Denver, Colorado, Sara began her career in Denver before moving to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2002.  She worked as a project manager at Poss Architecture+Planning for eight years, concentrating on high-end residential homes as well as commercial and hospitality projects.  Sara also had the opportunity to expand her knowledge base of the construction process while working with Jack Wilkie Builder, focusing her efforts on two custom homes.

Scott McHale has over two decades of experience in the field of architecture and design. His ability to listen, understand and interpret complex situations has enabled him to successfully execute designs which respond directly to the distinct programmatic needs and aesthetic goals of a wide variety of projects. His ability to manage project teams from inception to conclusion has produced an impressive collection of completed projects characterized by sustainably aware and integrated architecture. His vast experience allows him to efficiently oversee the entire project process, including establishing and developing conceptual directives, incorporating and implementing design concepts, final oversight and quality control of document production through to contract administration services.

Scott’s range of projects includes luxury and custom single-family homes, multifamily custom condominiums, affordable housing projects, and infrastructure and transportation projects. Notable among his portfolio are Aspen’s Limelight/Monarch Residences, Der Berghof Condominiums, Victorian Square and The Gant Conference Center. Coupled with his previous work at CCY Architects, Scott has designed and managed projects in resort areas throughout Colorado, as well as Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Korea, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Scott also has practical experience as a contractor and builder after personally constructing and successfully completing his own home in Carbondale, Colorado.

Brandt Shwayder has over a decade of experience in the field of architecture, including over 11 years with Rowland+Broughton.  He has extensive computer modeling, rendering, and visualization skills, and an enthusiasm for design, detail and building science.  After studying in Rome, Italy, and completing his Master of Architecture degree at University of Colorado, Brandt started his professional career working in Baden, Switzerland, collaborating with his former professor Philippe Barman.  Their work was featured in numerous publications and was exhibited in the 2004 Swiss Art Awards in Basel, Switzerland, and the Pavillion de l’Arsenal in Paris, France.  This experience afforded Brandt the opportunity to design and model several high profile competition entries for architecture in Europe, including an art museum for Lausanne, Switzerland, and a landmark for Paris’ 2012 Olympic bid.

Brandt achieved LEED Accredited Professional status in 2009 and has since designed several LEED registered projects seeking certification.  He is working on a wide variety of architectural projects including single family residential, commercial and tenant improvement, and hospitality projects.

Originally from Virginia, Brandt moved to Colorado to study at the University of Denver, focusing on art conservation and art history. Brandt enjoys seeking out design inspiration while traveling – whether locally or around the globe – and incorporates these rich experiences into his design vocabulary.

Delvon Nemechek has over a decade of experience in the field of architecture, working in custom residential, hospitality, multifamily lodges, resort development and planning, healthcare, commercial, mixed use, restaurant and retail. He spent time in the Czech Republic at the Czech Technical University studying design and architecture.  In the past, Delvon worked on numerous projects in the Roaring Fork Valley, most notably as the Project Architect for the award-winning Hotel Jerome renovation.

Delvon has worked on projects such as the Limelight Residences, Obermeyer Place, St. Regis Aspen Resort, Hotel Jerome and various residential renovations. His extended knowledge of SketchUp assists in process and design presentations. He embraces the architectural process, striving to learn from each experience.

Will Otte has nearly a decade of experience in the field of architecture. He has worked on high-end residential, hospitality, and multifamily resort housing.  Additionally, he has participated on winning teams for municipal RFQ and RFP competitions for affordable housing in resort mountain communities. He has been involved in several projects, including high-end residential projects, hotel and restaurant remodels, artist studios and ground up mixed-use proposals.

Will’s personal interest in design lies at the intersection of digital design and the tactile product. While in school, he collaborated on a variety of Digital Fabrication projects and is currently making furniture from recycled materials using these same processes. His design sensibilities have led to the design and production of a wide array of both practical and artistic items. These items are created using computer modeling in conjunction with CNC manufacturing and laser cutting processes. The breadth of the objects will has designed encompass alpine skis, ceiling installations, furniture, and artwork.

A native of Aspen, Colorado, he is currently taking his ARE exams in pursuit of earning his architectural license.

Mark Hardeman has over two decades of experience in the field of architecture. He is currently working on a variety of projects, including hospitality and large-scale custom residential. He has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork, AIA Memphis Architectural Scavenger Hunt, CANstruction, Casas for CASA, and the Memphis Center City Commission.

Previously, he worked with DPA Architectural Group, Reno-Smith Architects, LLC and CCY Architects, LLC. Most recently, Mark worked with ESC/Xssentials, assisting with the design and production of in-home theaters. His project experience includes an addition to the Holy Cross Energy Administration Building, a private residence in Telluride, The Chattanooga Experience Museum, an addition to the LASC Planetarium and Space Theater in Baton Rouge, the Gibson Guitar Manufacturing Plant and Museum in Memphis, and The Children’s Museum of Memphis. Notably, Mark won the Dean’s Medal for outstanding graduating designer and the AIA President’s Award for Service to a Chapter.

Carol Way Cisco has over 20 years experience in the field of interior design.  Before joining Rowland+Broughton, Carol was Principal of Signature interiors + studio, where her extreme talent and commitment to excellence in design was recognized by ASID and IIDA. Prior to that, she was Director of Interior Design for an international design-build team for many years, during which time she personally designed and project managed 40 design/build hospitality, residential and commercial projects.

Recognizing the impact that interior design has on healing and recovery, Carol founded Designing for Veterans, an award-winning non-profit focused on aiding our wounded heroes. She regularly holds national seminars on the subject and her work has been published in ASID magazines numerous times.

Currently, Suzannah uses her diverse professional experience in customer relations, design and business to spearhead R+B’s website, editorial and award submission efforts.  As part of R+B’s marketing team for the past three years, she aids in writing proposals and in creating collateral for business development. She is also is happy an integral leader of R+B’s DOF (Director of Fun) Committee, which works to build our culture and provide team support and satisfaction through creating opportunities for shared experiences.

Tim has previous experience in residential construction and remodeling and has been involved in projects ranging from small community proposals to large hospitality remodels and expansions. Tim grew up in southwest Pennsylvania and is currently working on a variety of hospitality and residential projects through all phases of design and construction.

Previously, Craig worked for Humphries Poli Architects in Denver.  A Colorado native, he grew up following his father to construction sites where he gained an early exposure to and appreciation of both commercial and residential construction types, sparking a life-long passion for building and design.  He also regularly serves as an invited juror for graduate-level design courses.

Derek Keil brings with him a decade of experience in the field of architecture working on a diverse portfolio of residential, commercial, and hospitality projects.  As leader of the Building Science committee in the R+B studios, Derek focuses on research and education in building technology and sustainable design.  He is also leading the creation and implementation of the Project Architect Manual, setting studio standards and expectations for team roles.

Before coming to R+B, Derek worked with Svigals + Partners in New Haven, Connecticut, and Revuelta Architecture International in Miami, Florida. He spent six years with Luckey Climbers, a design-build firm specializing in creating unique and imaginative climbing structures for institutional and commercial clients around the world. Derek is originally from Ithaca, New York, and is an avid sailor and outdoor enthusiast.

Diem Tran is currently taking her ARE exams in pursuit of is currently working on a variety of residential projects and rendering projects. She is currently taking her ARE exams in pursuit of earning her architectural license.

A native of Colorado, Diem graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a Bachelor of Environmental Design and a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Psychology. She then received her Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan. During her time in graduate school, Diem interned at a variety of firms, such as NBBJ Seattle, Gensler Seattle, and SSD Architecture in NYC, while also working on a variety of research projects with T8Projects and Morcillo Pallarés + Rule Arquitectos.

Diem’s research on “Individual Differences in the Office: Personality Factors and Work-Space Enclosure,” with Casey Lindberg and Meredith Banasiak, was published in the Journal of Architectural and Planning Research in the Winter of 2017.

Jan Pfeifer has over two decades of experience in the field of accounting. Most recently, she was the controller at Aspen Square for 8 years. Previously, Jan was the accountant for The Inn at Aspen and worked in accounting for the Aspen Skiing Company and First Resort Software.

Her responsibilities include payroll, benefits administration, accounts payable, credit card entry and reconciliation, and bank and investment account reconciliations.

Born and raised in Montana, Jan’s interests include hiking, reading, skiing and spending time with her family. She is a pianist and enjoys many of the local opportunities to listen to quality music. Jan is a member of the Aspen Choral Society and has volunteered for the local schools and senior center.

Rahul Mohare has nearly two decades of experience in all phases of architecture, interior design and construction management. He has worked on a wide array of projects, including urban infill mixed-use developments, high-end residential, multi-family residential, commercial, adaptive reuse and urban design. Rahul has extensive computer modeling and visualization skills, and an enthusiasm for design and detail.

He has worked for Denver area firms, such as Davis Partnership, Andrea Lawrence Wood Interior Design, and Van Meter Williams Pollack, across all phases of architecture, interior design and construction management. In 2008, Rahul was awarded the AIA Young Architect Award for built Architecture for the Rail Yard Lofts projects.  Personal passions include cooking, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Jordan Borkovec has a decade of experience in the field of architecture. He has extensive experience in design, production and consultant coordination through the schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration project phases. Additionally, Jordan has a widespread knowledge of multiple computer modeling programs, rendering software, and the administrative software tools necessary to take a project from start to finish. His professional experience providing architectural services for clients engaged in the development of healthcare and custom residential projects has imparted him with the skills necessary to collaboratively solve a breadth of complex design challenges. Specifically, Jordan’s involvement and leadership in the design of free-standing emergency departments, in-patient hospitals, diagnostic imaging, medical offices, primary care clinics, and large custom residential gives him a unique insight into executing and coordinating multifaceted project requirements, while successfully addressing each client request.

Originally from the small mountain town of Crested Butte, Colorado, and following several years of professional experience, he simultaneously continued part-time professional work while completing his Masters degree.  Designing and building the Ridgway Performing Arts Stage under Rick Sommerfeld’s Design-Build Studio inspired Jordan to re-direct his career’s trajectory to pursue design outside of the healthcare industry and down a path which would offer a wider variety of project types.

Lorena Vargas specializing in customer service and client support, she brings valuable knowledge and a sincere interest in creating customized experiences.

Growing up in the Roaring Fork Valley, Lorena was granted a full two-year scholarship to Colorado Mountain College. Deferring to garner work experience, she joined The St. Regis Aspen Resort as Spa Supervisor. While there, the spa was acknowledged as #1 in the country and #2 in the world. Lorena also worked as Administrative Assistant at the City of Aspen and as Studio Manager for O2 Aspen.

Maslin Mellick is an aspiring architect still in the beginning phases of her career. As an Architectural Designer in Rowland+Broughton’s Aspen office, she uses her strengths in graphics and 3D modelling to support production at the firm. She is a resource for Project Managers and other designers within the company.

Prior to working at Rowland + Broughton, Maslin worked in Boston at Zero Energy Design where she gained experience in passive house design strategies on custom residential homes. Her passion for sustainable design started when she attended the undergraduate program at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. While attending she also obtained a LEED Green Associate certification from USGBC. Since then, she has become a board member of Passive House Rocky Mountain, promoting and advocating for use of this standard in the Rocky Mountain region. She is a member of Rowland+Broughton’s Environmental and Sustainability Committee where she continues to inspire her love for green architecture throughout the office.

Maslin is from Massachusetts, and earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Architecture + Design with minors in Building Construction Technology and Art History from the University of Massachusetts. As a steward to any community she joins, Maslin volunteers both locally and internationally. The urge to explore and educate herself on communities around the world has brought her to Haiti, Copenhagen, Europe, and across the United States to broaden her horizons.

Zachary Carson has three years’ experience in the field of architecture working in higher education, commercial, residential, mixed-use, corporate interiors and urban design. In the past he has worked on projects of varying scales and locations, most notably on the 3,600-unit masterplan Riverline in Chicago, IL.

Zachary is an Architect in Rowland+Broughton’s Denver studio and is currently working on a number of residential and hospitality projects. His experience in three-dimensional modeling and representation assists in the development of numerous marketing initiatives and design process presentations. He believes the dialogue and discourse of architecture is the greatest tool we have as creative individuals. He serves on R+B’s Visualization and Process & Graphics committees.

A Registered Architect in the state of Illinois, Zachary is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a LEED Green Associate. He is from Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis where he earned dual Masters of Architecture and Masters of Urban Design degrees. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Architecture at The Ohio State University.

Brent Carr has over two decades of experience in the architecture and interior design fields. Along with the ability to create a knowledgeable and creative team that understands the importance of quality design and construction documentation, he believes that maintaining a high standard of pride in the architectural process itself is key to a satisfied client and a creative, successful project. Brent’s range of experience includes Design and Construction Project Management of all stages of architectural design, concept development, through to construction documentation and administration. Having designed and managed projects in many countries spanning Australasia, South America, Eurasia and nearly every state of the U.S., Brent has acquired a vast assortment of varying design styles and construction methodology.

Brent has broad international experience in various forms of hospitality, corporate, education facilities, luxury single-family architecture and historic renovations. Establishing a common theme of maintaining the clients’ best interests, through continuous communication, from project design inception through to opening day, is vital to his design and construction successes to date. Most recently, Brent was Senior Architectural Project Manager with CR Architecture + Design, where he focused on boutique hospitality hotels and associated historic renovations.

Kirby Benjamin is an Interior Designer at Rowland and Broughton’s Denver studio with experience in interior design, architecture, and graphic design. Previously, Kirby worked as an adjunct professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges where she taught various architecture studios focused on conceptual design, graphics, and technical skills.

 

With a background in graphic design, Kirby is a member of the Process and Graphics committee at R + B where she is helping to set standards and create clear documentation process manuals. Utilizing her backgrounds in both architecture and interiors, she focuses on the seamless transition between the interior and exterior.

 

Kirby received her Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and her Master of Design in Interior Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design. Kirby worked at Leighton Design Group, an interior design firm in New York, as a junior project manager and Fractal Group, an architecture firm also based in New York. Kirby grew up in Pennsylvania, is a devoted yogi, and is passionate about building furniture.

Lindsay Bench is a licensed and registered interior designer with experience in both high-end residential and commercial segments, including hospitality, commercial office, multi-family, retail and industrial design.

Lindsay’s involvement in the R+B Materials Library committee allows her to be well versed and current among new products and developments that, in-turn, provide clients and projects with the latest materials and most appropriate solutions. She is also a contributor to our Revit committee as an advanced user, helping to educate the R+B team with technical insight and ensuring the highest level of production standards from all employees.

Born in Houston, Lindsay previously worked with Powers Brown Architecture on projects throughout the U.S. and Canada, and residentially with Creative Touch Interiors and Jane-Page Design Group in Houston Texas.

With nearly a decade of experience in the field of architecture and interior design, Brandon Herbst has been involved in many award-winning projects throughout Southern California.

A skilled designer and computer modeler, Brandon provides a unique perspective on technology’s role in the design, communication, and project delivery process.  He understands the importance of a firm’s connection to its community and has been heavily involved in local AIA chapters.  In 2017 Brandon received the AIAOC Service Award for his commitment to design and work on the AIAOC Design Awards committee.

Brandon is actively pursuing his architecture license and received his Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic Institute San Luis Obispo.  Before coming to R + B, Brandon was the senior designer and director of technology and innovation for Anders Lasater Architects, a design firm in Laguna Beach, CA.  He also has experience in furniture design and construction and has collaborated with San Diego Urban Timber on several custom kitchen and furniture designs.  Brandon is originally from California but grew up in Washington D.C.  He is an outdoor enthusiast with a penchant for board sports and an avid cook.

Maggie Wohltjen contributes her abilities in graphics, visualization, and CAD to enhance the drawing production and marketing efforts of the firm.

Maggie received her Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University and is actively pursuing her architectural license. Before joining the R + B team, Maggie studied urban design at Auburn’s Urban Studio in Birmingham where she focused on architectural transience, urban revitalization, and city resilience. She also spent a semester at Auburn’s Rural Studio where she gained experience designing and building small-scale rural work spaces. She hopes to apply her understanding of both urban and rural conditions to her design work in Denver and the surrounding areas.

Born and raised in Kentucky, Maggie had many opportunities to travel the world with family while growing up. Having also spent four months abroad studying architecture in Italy, she is now passionate about travel and architectural history. Maggie also has experience as a writer for CRIT magazine, the national, student-led publication of the AIAS.

Eugenie Provost’s approach to design applies a balance between her technical skills and visual talents to achieve work that is immersed with high attention to detail, quality of craft, and socio-economic stewardship.

Eugenie received her Masters of Architecture from the University of Louisiana Lafayette – School of Architecture and Design.  During her Graduate Studies, Eugenie worked on several service projects, supported faculty grant research, and recently completed her investigation of early education and elderly care in her Master’s Project. Additionally, her research on “Cell Phone Technology and the Built Environment,” with T. Scott Smith, Phd, Corey L. Saft, RA, LEED-AP, and Ashlie Latiolais, AIA NCARB, was published in Cell Phone Distraction, Human Factors, and Litigation, 2nd edition, in the Spring of 2018.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Building Science with a Concentration of Architectural Technology and Design from Appalachian State University. Throughout her senior year, she participated in an innovative design driven curriculum within a multidisciplinary environment of faculty and students known as IDEXlab. During this time, she and her team designed and built a new Park Office + Welcome Center for the non-profit Valle Crucis Community Park in Valle Crucis, North Carolina.

Eugenie’s professional experience includes over five years of residential design work as well as architectural summer internships in both Lafayette, LA and Houston, TX, ranging from mixed-use developments to healthcare architecture projects. Eugenie is actively pursuing licensure upon the completion of her architectural experience program.
